Penniman’s son Dan Penniman announced in a written statement that his father died of cancer this morning. The black artist, born in 1932, who described himself as “the architect of Rock’n Roll”, had created important works especially until the 1970s. Penniman was ranked 8th in the list of 100 immortal musicians of all time, prepared by Rolling Stone magazine in 2005.
