Huawei introduced the new Kirin 985 chipset that will power flagship phones. The new processor with 5G support increases the total number of Huawei’s 5G chipsets to three with the recently introduced high-end Kirin 990 5G and mid-range Kirin 820 5G. Although the new Kirin 985 is the flagship processor, the Kirin 990 is not as powerful as 5G. From the TSMC’s 7 nm manufacturing process, the processor offers a single chip 5G baseband solution without any add-ons. It also supports 2G / 3G / 4G / 5G network standards and dual-mode NSA / SA 5G. Kirin 985 overtakes Snapdragon 865 in 5G performance Kirin 985’s maximum downlink speed is 1277 Mbps and uplink speed is 173 Mbps. Kirin 985 is said to have about 40% higher downlink speed and about 75% higher uplink speed compared to Snapdragon 865 processor integrated with Snapdragon X55 modem. The new processor is also optimized specifically for high speed travel scenarios. For example, at a speed of 90 km / h, the downlink speed can reach 589 Mbps and the uplink speed can reach 63 Mbps. These values are 31% and 37% higher than the Snapdragon X55 integrated Snapdragon 865 chipset, respectively. 8-core processor merges with Mali G-77 Kirin 985 features an 8-core CPU consisting of a single large core, three mid-cores and four small cores. Kirin 985 has a single Cortex-A76 core at a clock speed of 2.58 GHz, and three Cortex-A76 cores, each with a frequency of 2.4 GHz, and four Cortex-A55 cores with a clock speed of 1.84 GHz. The new yoga set includes an 8-core Mali-G77 GPU, as in the Kirin 990, as well as a dual-core NPU AI unit and ISP 5.0 display unit. Also, according to Huawei, the 5G network performance of Kirin 985 is sufficient for dual 5G SIM usage. The processor offers 5G anti-interference, 5G low latency and 5G energy efficiency. The Honor 30 series introduced today was the first smartphones to use the Kirin 985 chipset. Huawei also plans to use the Kirin 985 on nova 7. The new Kirin 985 will be available on smartphones in the next generation.
